Depression is complex. While people can occasionally feel depressed, the diagnosis of depression is a medical one, based on several factors. A professional is required to diagnose depression. Some of the criteria they use include:

  • Feeling helpless or hopeless.
  • Losing interest in activities you enjoy like hobbies, relationships, and sex.
  • Changes in appetite or weight without trying.
  • Feeling angry or irritable more often and sometimes without reason.
  • Sleeping too much or not enough.
  • Decrease in energy.
  • Unexplained aches and pains.
  • Participating in reckless behavior.
  • Thinking of death or suicide.

A depression diagnosis requires behaviors or feelings like these for more than two weeks. A doctor or counselor can help you understand if what you are experiencing is a passing feeling of depression or a diagnosis of depression.

There is not one specific thing that heals depression. Research shows that there are a variety of things that can help, with many people benefiting from a combination of treatments. Possibilities include:

  • Counseling
  • Medication
  • Prayer
  • Exercise
  • Rest
  • Routines
  • Support system
  • Challenging negative thoughts
  • Meditation
  • Breathing
  • Fresh air
  • Sunshine

At Redlands Christian Counseling, we believe that there is a combination of treatments that can help you. We work with you to discover what you need so you can find healing from depression.

The most common form of counseling is talk therapy in which you talk with your counselor. You can do this by sitting, standing, pacing, or laying down. It is all based on what works for you.

You will likely have a 50–60-minute session with your counselor once a week. This will give you time to talk through things and implement any strategies the counselor wants to use to help you. The environment is comfortable and private, giving you a safe place to address whatever you need to.

Confidentiality is a common concern for people in counseling. We are dedicated to upholding your trust. Your privacy is essential to us at Redlands Christian Counseling. We will not share information about you or anything you tell us unless it involves harming yourself or someone else. We are required to share this with the appropriate people to ensure you and others remain safe. You and your well-being are our priority.

The number of sessions is different for everyone. You may need a few sessions to work through things or you may need to come for a longer period. The goal is not to have you come to counseling for the rest of your life. We want to help you with your depression so you can continue your journey to freedom. You and your counselor can find a timeline that works for you.

It is perfectly normal to have reservations when starting something new, especially something so personal and important. Redlands Christian Counseling wants to help you do what is best for you. If you are unsure about counseling, we want to help.

Things you can do if you are unsure:

  • Call our office to ask questions.
  • Schedule a time to meet a counselor.
  • Try a session.
  • Commit to a month of sessions and see how you feel.
  • Bring someone you trust with you.

We want you to feel comfortable, and we will work with you to answer any questions and help you decide if counseling is the right choice for you.

You don’t need to do this alone.

Remember, depression can make you feel more alone. We are here to remind you that you are not alone. God is always with you. Facing depression isn’t something you face alone.
